12/17 Physics class and homework due 1/6
Hi folks,
In class today, we got into a new concept of free body diagrams. Free body diagrams help to analyze the different forces on objects in order to determine the net force and acceleration of those objects.
I'm taking us a little deeper than the book goes on this subject so homework this week is to read the following web pages
http://www.physicsclassroom.com/class/newtlaws/Lesson-2/Drawing-Free-Body-Diagrams
http://www.physicsclassroom.com/class/newtlaws/Lesson-2/Determining-the-Net-Force
I would highly recommend taking a look at the problems and the solutions on each one of these pages.
Also, do the interactives on this page http://www.physicsclassroom.com/Physics-Interactives/Newtons-Laws/Free-Body-Diagrams/Free-Body-Diagram-Interactive. The page is a little clumsy, but with a bit of patience hopefully you'll get the hang of it. When you get the answer, write down the force body diagram on a separate piece of paper to hand in.

12/3 Physics Class and homework due 12/10
We spent some more time getting to know Newton's Second Law today. To "get our hands on" the concept we went outside and saw how Newton's second law applied to pulling a wagon. We put more and more mass into the wagon (0, 1 and 2 students) and saw that as we increased the mass the acceleration went down.
Homework due next week is:
Read pages 59 - 70 in the text book
Do Review Questions 1 - 18 on page 71 and 72
Do Plug and Chug questions 1 - 5 on page 72

10/22 HS Physics update and homework due 10/29
Hi folks,
This week we covered gravity in a bit more detail and spent some time exploring gravity in relation to our acceleration and velocity formulas we've been working on. To do this, we went outside and everyone got a chance to throw a ball as far and as high as they could. We then calculated the height, the vertical velocity and the horizontal velocity of the throw.

10/1 Physics class update and homework due 10/8
Today we spent some time getting to know the concept of acceleration. It's a key concept in physics and one we will be working with quite a bit and coming back to a lot over the year. Most of today was spent on a lab working with the acceleration of rubber band powered vehicles.
Homework for this week will be to work with the data we collected in class to create some graphs and to use those graphs to answer some questions.
First off, using only your group's data, create two different graphs. (Please use graph paper.) One for velocity vs. time and one for acceleration vs. time. Time should always be on the horizontal axis.
Once you finish your graphs, answer the following questions.
1. What was the greatest acceleration that you saw overall?
2. What was the smallest acceleration?
3. When you saw a negative acceleration, what did that mean the car was doing?
4. What was the highest speed any of the cars achieved?
5. If a car has a constant positive acceleration, what is the car continuing to do?
6. If a car has no acceleration what is the car continuing to do?
7. Draw 2 more graphs (one for velocity and one for acceleration) but this time, try to image what the graphs would have looked like in a perfect world. In other words, if the cars had a nice steady acceleration at the beginning and at the end of their runs. Think carefully about this. The acceleration graph may be different than you first think.

9/17 Physics update and homework due 9/24
Hi folks,
First off, I think I am still missing some emails for some of the students. For some reason my email program failed to save any of the emails I entered last week. Parents, please check and see if your child is missing from the list. If so, I'd appreciate it if you could give me their address. Thank you!
Today we began our study on linear motion. We took a look at how all motion is relative and we introduced some vocabulary for motion, speed, distance, displacement, velocity and acceleration.
Read 10 - 16 and 21-23 in your Conceptual Physics text
Do Review Questions on pg 25 #'s 1- 14
For Extra Credit do any one of the 3 activities on pg. 26

Hi folks,
Well, it looks like Florence may still be causing trouble. From the weather websites we should be done with major precipitation this morning. More to come this afternoon. However, I'm hearing reports of flooded roads and power outages.
How do folks feel? I'm certainly willing to make the drive down. Please let me know if you aren't planning to come. If too few folks are going to be there we'll let class go for this morning.
Thanks everyone.

Physics Class is ON for Monday
From what I'm hearing, it sounds like the roads should be passable for class tomorrow. Please let me know if, for some reason, you can't make it and please be safe. I record all my classes so if you can't be there you can always watch the recording.
I hope everyone was nice, safe and comfortable through these past few days.

9/10 Physics Class - Intro to Class
Each day after class, I will be sending and email with a short description of what we did in class as well as the homework that is due next week.
This week we spent some time going over class expectations and the grading procedures. We also spent a bit of time discussing why science is necessary and how it is done.
Homework for next week is:
Read pages 1 - 7 In the Conceptual Physics text
Do Review Questions 1 - 10 on page 8
Do Think and Explain questions 1 - 3 on page 8
By the way, my email address list failed me so, parents, if you wouldn't mind, could you please pass on this information to your children. Thank you!
Best,
Jim Mueller
